Don't believe so... The cables up to the VAX from the 11/03 were
parallel ribbon cables.  The only thing that may be true is the
microcode patches have been serially loaded. 

Been 20+ years since my 11/780 HW Maint training on Crosby Drive, but
IIRC, the PDP11/03 did a "maintenance return" of a 16 bit word up through the
parallel interface to the 11/780 where it hit the console interface
board.  That was responsible for moving the bits wherever down the VAX
backplane.  Don't remember if that was bit serial or not...
