   As usual, some detailed, accurate information might be
helpful.  As I recall, there's more than one type of "DE500",
and cards older than the "-BA" variant may have more

   _All_ combinations?  Really?  How many ends are you
including in that "each end"?

   With my weak psychic powers, that tells me approximately
nothing about the network configuration, the port
characteristics of the switch(es), or anything else.

   My first suggestion would be to reduce the complexity,
unless there's some actual need to have two switches between
these systems.

   I always used autonegotiation with the DE500-BA cards in
my AlphaStation 200 4/233 systems (connected to cheap,
unmanaged 10/100 network switches), and never had any
trouble.  I probably never tried connecting them to a gigabit
switch.
