In what way does ZIP have file size limitation in terms of its format ?
is there a catalogue at the begining which points to file offsets or
contains 32 bit values for individual file sizes ?

Sorry, I didn't mean "pointer" in the sense of a memory pointer. I guess
the word "offset" is more appropriate. (but it is a still a pointer to
some location in a file, but not a pointer to memory).
