For that reason I specifically wanted an FTDI (RS-232 <=> USB) serial
adapter.  The ones they sell in consumer electronic stores generally
don't work, or not as they should.  In fact, they all too often don't
even work under Windows x86-64 versions!  (That was another reason I
wanted an FTDI one, since my study forces me to run Windows or Mac OS
X.)  They ironically work better under Linux, BSD and so on.
