Is the Ultrix machine on a different machine, or is that just a virtual 
machine on the same host again?

I'm still kindof fond of the MAC address possibility. What host system 
are you using? Can you check the MAC address of the interface?

Apart from that, my next thought would be perhaps a protocol change, 
which a very new VMS have dropped the support for the old version, but 
that feels more like just grasping at straws...
