I am not so sure about that.  IBM were doing mainframe OS virtualization 
decades ago.

When Alphas first started shipping I was keen to find a vacancy which 
would give me experience of them, but the only vacancies on offer were 
insisting on only talking to folks who already had Alpha experience, as 
if it was some dark and mysterious skill to have.

I was therefore very impressed when I finally got my hands on an Alpha 
system (at V6.1) to see how much like the VAX version it was, at least 
from a system management point of view.
