To RLFitch: Are the two systems you mentioned on different 
ISPs/networks?  I bet yes.  Due to "zombied" Windoze PC's, many ISPs now 
require all email sent to go through their servers (using port 587), and 
*not* directly to the destination (using port 25).  That's because 
zombies were/are used to send tons of spam.  And that's why I asked my 
question, is any of HP's TCP packages or add-on software aware of Port 
587 submission?  My ISP (Verizon) is one of those that block outgoing 
Port 25 connections, and the symptoms are as you describe if I try it.
