Normally, writes go to all members. What happens when one member has a
problem, for whatever reason (which might be transient---network cable
loose, perhaps)? I/O will hang for a while in the hope that it might
come back and after a time the member with problems is expelled from the
shadow set. This can be adjusted with system parameters (and, these
days, perhaps with SET SHADOW commands).
