In addition to my follow-up to John Reagan,
I note the post from "hb" that mentioned a
possible alias for "which".  Indeed, that is 
the case on the systems I'm poking around on:

09:10:28 # which which
alias which='alias | /usr/bin/which --tty-only --read-alias --show-dot --show-tilde'
        /usr/bin/which

lhskhf at lgcyorapp3:(SL=1):(RC=0):/home/lhskhf
09:13:17 #

Does the /usr/bin/which take those switches on 
Ubuntu or cygwin, etc.?
