It is a Brother 7820 multi-function laser printer/fax/copier.

If I had to guess at blame, I'd start with the cheap switches I use before looking at the 
printer.  I've had switches that needed a power cycle, usually after a thunder storm.  If 
it's a bad storm, with nearby lightening strike(s), then sometimes new switches are 
required.  Life is hell, and then you die ....
