You're thinking about full-height .vs. half-height drives.  Yes, definitely a weight difference.  I don't understand what you mean by "compatible", since Digital sold some of the blue containers with full-height and then later with half-height drives.  I don't think the fifth character referenced that change.  They also had some which used a 68-pin drive and then later standardized on the 80-pin SCA connector.
