So far as I know, VMS installation from tape never made it
off VAX. With the easy availability of CD-ROM drives, why
would anyone have put any engineering effort into booting an
Alpha from tape?
Apparently, DEC/Compaq stopped testing even _VAX_
installation from tape around V7.2, because they broke it
there. I still have a modified VMS072.B kit lying around
which doesn't do this:
[...]
* Enter name of drive holding the DECnet-Plus kit: mua0:
%SYSTEM-F-IVLOGNAM, invalid logical name
********************************************************************************
Installation of OpenVMS VAX V7.2 incomplete.
Error - exiting from Mandatory Update phase procedure.
Restart this phase by rebooting the system.

Ah, the good old days. (Probably can't blame the Indians
for that one.)
