OK, this experimental result pretty much answers my question.
Too bad, a VS2000 and a corresponding MV are sitting
in my basement waiting to be processed.
I would have preferred a well-tested DDS drive over
those dodgy TK50s with unclear technical status.

As for the reverse experiment: I once hooked up
a TK50 to an ancient RS/6000 which so far could
cope with all kinds of tapes. The configure manager
told me something along the line
that the TK50 is somehow recognized,
but would be too strange a device to be properly configured.

Slightly OT:
Aren't the DEC-badged DDS drives (TLZxx)
in fact Sonys?
