Iwould agree that the problem is less likely within the SMG routines and more likely within the calling code.  Please post additional details about the code and calls to SMG.  The version of the VAX OS would be helpful as well.  There may have been "upgrades" since the VAX version that may be at play here.  This to is rare as most routines are tested for compatibility.
