Here's a tip which worked when buying my last printer in a bricks and 
mortar establishment:

The salesman tried to interest me in HP printers.  I simply pointed to 
the Mac compatible logo on the Brother printers and and the lack of that 
logo on the HP models and that shut him up.

Absolutely.  I once watched a very competent Compaq hardware engineer 
getting increasingly frustrated with an LN03 or similar printer.  He 
spent all afternoon getting nowhere.  In the end I told him to take a 
break and go home :-)
