Now might be a good time to get to know a little about Wireshark, so
you can actually see what traffic is coming in to and going out from
your Linux box.

Also, don't forget that "I cannot ping (whatever)" is less helpful
when troubleshooting like this than saying what you actually did (cut
+paste is good), and what actually happened (cut+paste is good).
Sometimes ping has helpful error messages, sometimes it doesn't.
