thingiverse.com indeed shows an amazing variety of printable shapes
that I wouldn't have guessed it could do. Wonder if it could do
a klein bottle, or other such stuff. A little more googling came up
with some pages like
   http://avillage.web.virginia.edu/rpc/FDM.pdf
(where fdm=fused deposition modeling, better for googling than 3d printing),
which touched on constraints, but still no rigorous mathematical def.
