In a proper democracy, you don't have to forget how you got one.
We've had the elected president not be the one who got the most
popular votes 3 times. The last time due to a miscount in the
region controlled by the winner's brother, and via a decision made
by his party's political appointees.
We've had McCarthy and Nixon.
Congress routinely passes, and presidents routinely sign, laws which
are contrary to the Constitution. Fortunately, in many cases the
courts catch them at it.
We didn't get a democracy by asking the existing govnerment "pretty
please". A bit of scepticism is healthy.
