I tried quite a pile of 256MB modules in my PWS 500 until
I found those pairs which did work so I could fill the
box to the brim, i.e. 1.5GB. The annoying thing is, that
even though many sticks appeared to be the right ones,
they either crashed the box already during its selftest,
or, even worse, they survived the early memtest only
to crash the system (Tru64) later on :-(
I'm not too keen to repeat all this with 512MB modules.

Slightly related: it's a bit weird that none of the
Alpha workstations and precious few entry systems allow
to stuff more than 2GB of RAM into them, so that
one could make proper use of the 64-bit CPU inside.
