NT4 didn't arrive until late 1996.  I got my first system in early 1997.
CD burners were still pretty expensive.

OK, not a good comparison, but it did raise the question of NT's 
suitability for tasks where you can't afford to miss events.

IIRC early CD burners didn't have much cache if any, and increasing this 
in later models took much of the pain away.
