That's because it's a form of carbon dating. :-)
At one time in Linux, "ps -ax" was the norm and then "ps ax" came along.
Since I started out with "ps -ax", that's what I tend to still type these
days even though I get a warning when I do.
And yes, I always use "-" in tar commands as well. :-)
