University types of do the research to develop a new file system. Sun
who spent money developping zfs. Apple who spend money develooping and
improving HFS. And various folks who put in file systems to accept FAT,
FAT32 and NTFS file systems on Unix etc etc. IBM appears to have a
clustered file system on its Unix (AIX).
HFS is totally different from ODS in that there are no directory files.
there is a directory database containing all directories. So when you
do an "ls" and see directories (or folders when in Finder), those are
synthetized from the database because they aren't really "files" in the
file system (whereas on VMS, a .DIR file is an actual file, complete
with file ID etc).
