I never liked them either.  Using controllers which could present a 
couple of disks as one to the O/S was much neater.

It's a long time since I looked at this but IIRC a major disadvantage for 
recovery purposes is that you cannot do an image restore to multi-volume 
disk sets.

IIRC (again) this is because BACKUP/IMAGE requires the target to be 
mounted /FOREIGN, and there's no way of binding two or more disks 
together with /FOREIGN.
