Yes, me too.  At that last job, I took a task where the existing code 
was in BASIC.  I started out with a blank C file, and rewrote the code 
from scratch.  I had to start with the data utilities first, as the 
module needed something to work with, so I know what you mean.

I maintained it for 3 years.  I found it one of the high points of that 
job, as it needed updates each year for legislative reasons.  (MS-DRG)  
The updates tended to be interesting.
