That's why extensive accurate comments, kept up to date, are required.

A long time ago, in a company far away, I heard of a product, written by 
one man, with maybe 10,000 lines of code, and only two comments.  They 
brought him back to comment his code at a rate of $50/hr, in the late 
1980s.  He added comments like "What the fuck is this??" and "????", 
took his money and ran.  The program was properly documented and coded 
by a meticulous female programmer who made a thick binder-full of 
documentation on the program, module by module.

I swear, female programmers are better than males.  Maybe they're more 
patient.
