Technically, you can use OpenVMS host-based volume shadowing (HBVS) 
with IDE/ATA disks.  But the support is arguably barely useful.  
IDE/ATA disks are ejected from the shadowset on any read or write 
errors.  The sector recovery processing common with SCSI and SAS disk 
devices is not attempted on IDE/ATA disks, and this greatly limits the 
value of HBVS with these disks.  Simply adding the IDE/ATA disks back 
into the HBVS shadowset becomes a hassle.

Or his own posting.  Adding disks can increase the availability of the 
configuration, but it inherently decreases the reliability of the 
configuration.
