Kindle requires the proprietary Mobi format.  Industry standard format
is EPUB.  This is the VHS BetaMax wars all over and this time Amazon
is playing the role of Sony trying to force its chosen format on an
industry.  This time Sony followed the heard when EPUB came out and
now they have quite possibly the largest ebook store on the Web.

You will need a modern EPUB capable reader or the free software from
either Sony or BN.COM so you can read the book on your computer.  As
far as I know Calibre will not convert a file which has DRM and most
sites have DRM.
