and since you mentioned that this was a DS25,
it may have a RMC card installed (i think all the DS25's did ..)

I recall that line-ending protocol was different when talking to 
the RMC itself (versus VMS, or SRM).  But by now, you'll recognize the symptoms.

Another place I could recall line-endings being an issue, 
was when using a MOP-client (TSM, or linux moprc) to talk to a DECserver. 

The line-ending conflicts get really annoying if you get locked out 
of a system for bad-password retries, before recognizing the issue.
