As I understand it, in the early days of driving it made more
sense to have the steering wheel away from the center of the road.
(Easier to avoid driving off the road into a ditch.)

As roads got better and traffic moved faster, there was a transition.
Avoiding cars going the other way became relatively more important
than staying on the road.
