BTW, I left out the mode switching commands before the put because I
found with the current Engineering sftp image, it doesn't make any
difference to the failure mode.

However, if you are having problems reproducing it, try entering
"ascii dos" or "binary" as a seperate command before the put.

BTW, thanks in advance to anyone making the effort to try and identify
the scope of this problem.
