Well of course I couldn't resist.
GETSPI$_DISKS works as suggested.
This seems to suggest $GETRMI as a fully planned but not fully
implemented equivalent documented/supported interface. Been around for
quite a while too! Don't know why the obvious should be further dwelt upon.
