That is correct. And when the last IA64 chip comes out in 2014, HP will
likely continue to sell IA64 based sytems for many years, just as they
did after EV7 came out.
However, if you know that a migration will come, it is best to start early.
As a first step, you stop using any VMS specific system services when
updating existing or writing new apps on VMS. (Uness you have made the
decision to rewrite from scratch when you port).
You need to make architectural decisions on middleware such as an SQL or
other database, how you will map indexed files on the new systen, VMS
mailboxes etc.
And you want to know the new system inside out before you actually begin
the code porting.
This isn't done overnight.
