And coincidentally, last night I found a requirement for a DECnet joiner. 

My VAX on SimH cannot see my Alpha on FreeAXP via DECnet, though TCP/IP 
utilities have no problem.  They are on separate physical boxes, linked 
via a router with Gigabit ports.

I think another name for a DECnet joiner could be a Gigabit switch. :-)
