I think you've touched upon some of the reasons but if we make the
really off-the-wall presumption that HP's management has a forward
looking view of technology, the real question is: What can VMS do that
other platforms can't do and will never be able to do? The capability
curve of other platforms is rising rapidly. Maybe the people driving
VMS (whoever they are now) have looked around them and seen the
future. That's something our long-departed drivers failed to do, but
if they had we probably wouldn't be worrying about VMS today.

Even the cursed Windows Servers can now do multi-site availability and
load-balancing clustering quite well. The x86 platform is growing in
strength and is likely to continue. My favorite "best and most secure
platform in the world" is fighting a losing battle and that makes me
sad, but reality often does that.

A little off-topic, maybe, but it isn't hard to see a future without
binary computers. If HP were close to their projections we should be
seeing memristor memory devices in 2013, and that technology could
make binary as obsolete as vacuum tubes ("valves" for the UK folks).
Where would you spend your money if you were HP?
