Having discussed this issue briefly in the (german) PDF group I've
learned that this "feature" is called "PDF portfolio" and it is indeed
based on Flash. This "portfolio" may include file types other than PDF
as well. Apparently at least some publishers are already returning to
"native" PDF because these "portfolios" can not be opened on a number of
platforms.
