There is no standard Pascal "string".  Borland had a leading byte-count as 
well as Pchar which is a null-terminated string, VMS Pascal's VARYING OF 
CHAR uses a leading word-count, etc.   The Extended Pascal standard has 
variable length strings, but it does not specify the implementation only the 
external behavior.
