I was just about the mention CompuServe.  They were still running those 
systems in the mid-1990s at least.

One big mistake they made in upgrading from that infrastructure was 
insisting that clients had to run Windows (that's all they provided APIs 
to third party developers for) and by 1997 were gradually converting 
forums to use only that.  Only a few forums such as the Psion one stayed 
as accessible by a good old fashioned text interface.

(If I had come across CompuServe earlier I would have definitely have 
written some form of offline reader for VMS :_)  )
