This is, in my opinion (yeah, we're all entitled to one) the correct course.

When I obtain used hardware, I do the following:

1) Login / breakin to system account
2) SHOW LICENSE to see what licenses are on the system
3) LICENSE ISSUE to get the license information
4) disassemble the system, give it a good cleaning
5) test all devices from SRM
6) (using Steve's terminology) pave a new installation (requires media)

Yeah, I suffer from NIH (not invented here) and like to customize to my 
prejudices.  If this is a hobbyist system, for learning, then learn ...
