PMP is portable media player or portable music player, for those that
might wonder.
For working in proximity to servers - and having worked in various
rooms filled with SuperDome and AlphaServer GS1280 boxes over the years
- you really want (need) noise-canceling (NC) or noise-reducing
headphones. Well, unless you want to end up needing those hearing aid
gizmos, or living in your own endless Burns and Schreiber Yeah-Huh
sketch.
The Bose QC-series over-the-ears noise-canceling headphones are nice,
but are both expensive and construction is flimsy. I've seen the foam
cushions explode, and the main pivoting hinges crack. Some use AAA
batteries (and rechargeables work), some have custom-format
rechargeable battery packs.
The Sennheiser PXC series over-the-ears are very slightly less
effective at noise cancellation than are the Bose QCs, but the PXCs are
both less expensive and far more solidly constructed. They're also
slightly heavier than the Bose. Requires one AAA battery, and
rechargeable work fine.
I'm using the Sennheiser PXC-450 series now. The Bose QCs were just
too lightly constructed for me and my usual uses.
Both series headphones will mute an Integrity rx1600 server (my
benchmark for "loud"), but they're both really working hard to do that;
do yourself a favor and don't try to work near one of those, even with
NC headphones. Or yes, lock the servers in a server room. Or get
yourself quieter servers. (And other than the Office-Friendly Server
configurations, HP doesn't have much quiet to offer here for folks
using OpenVMS.)
