When I was running an Alpha cluster with 2 servers and 20+ satellites 
all booted from a common system disk this was a regular occurrence.  

Every time we had a network outage (too often) the satellites would 
crash and then reboot.

Each time a satellite booted there would be a message something like 
"Shadow master changed, dump file will be written" and a full merge 
would commence.

The solution was to move the satellite dump files to the workstation 
local disks using the Dump Off System Disk (DOSD) mechanism.
