I got a second hand one in 1989 which came with V5.2.  With 6MB RAM 
DECwindows didn't leave enough memory to do other useful work so I used 
VWS and that was fine.

IIRC given the other software[1] I ran on that system, with the single 
RD54 it had upgrading to V5.4 would have been a very tight fit, and V5.5 
was out of the question.

[1] as it was using VMS$TAILOR to take DECwindows off still left loads 
of stuff like fonts on disk, so I archived those off to tape and zapped 
them.
