I don't buy that.

Yeah, if the internals were totally alien.

But if the internals produced the same behaviour, then what's the problem.

If you've written code that depends upon internal data structures, that 
could be a problem.

If HP won't turn loose the current code base, then the options are 
forget VMS or write from scratch.
