Thanks but I was trying to use Google Groups for searching old messages, 
not for reading and posting.

FWIW I am using the http://eternal-september.org news server and 
MT-NewsWatcher for reading and posting.  The latter doesn't cope very 
well with UTF but it's a nice multi-windowed news reader that I am 
comfortable with.

I also use leafnode, a lightweight news server which serves only the 
groups you are interested in.  This means that I don't need to worry 
about slow news services (my previous provider throttled news groups at 
64Kb/s) and if I am somewhere where port 119 is blocked, I can ssh into 
it and use a command line news reader.
