   None of which looks to me like "lots of C errors", so I'm
still in the dark as to what the original problem was.

   Note that unless I've done this recently, I tend to unpack
the thing without "-a", hit the usual disaster, remember the
solution, and re-unpack the thing with "-a".  (The
recommended "-aa" is probably overkill, but also probably
harmless, because the files are all source=text.)
