Interesting question.
I see South Africa as been about a minority imposing their will on a
majority and doing it in a harsh and brutal manner.
OTOH, I see Japan as been more about outsiders asking the existing
and long established culture to be more open to those outsiders.
As such, I don't really see a valid comparison.

That's true. Until you mentioned him, I didn't even know he existed.
His website was the first thing I knew about him and was what I used to
form my initial impressions.
