Confirm there's no unit number collision with the SCSI controller, too.
That's usually 6 ot 7, but various boxes can easily change that address.
The ST3146807LC series does work on AlphaServer XP1000, though that's
via SBB cannister and a Qlogic SCSI controller.
Try moving the narrow stuff to the end of the SCSI bus.
Check the termination. Too little or too much can cause problems.
Failing all that, start with a minimal SCSI configuration, and add
pieces and figure out what can stay and what can't.
This still reeks of a unit number collision.
