In my case, I started out in the DEC world before moving to Unix for a
number of areas,
For me, it's more about been used to working with what's available under
Unix and missing those capabilities when I work on VMS.
BTW, the only version of emacs for VMS I saw wrote all over multiple system
directories and that's a no-no for me on production systems for programs
which don't _need_ to be installed in order for production tasks to be
carried out.
I have not built emacs in a long time, but under Linux you can build emacs
so that all bits of it live in a tree under a build-time specified location
in the same way as you can with the rest of the other GNU based software.
