Scientific Linux is one flavor I have installed on anumber of laptop
and desktop systems with no hickups at all.   The others were Ubuntu
and Puppy. :-)  One of the nice things about all three of these is
that they come with a Live-CD.  You can run the CD and know up front
if it is going to work with your hardware before even trying to do an
install.
