When I worked on a building site one tip I picked up was using a hammer 
to get a screw started into a piece of wood.  This depends on the type 
of wood of course.

In Yorkshire a hammer  is also known as "a Manchester screwdriver", 
usually shortened as in "pass me the Manchester", presumably intended to 
be a snipe at those from across the border in Lancashire.
