Hoff,

With all due respect, I do not believe that there was ever "PostScript(tm)" emulation. There is the Adobe PostScript interpreter, obviously maintained by Adobe. There are several non-Adobe PostScript implementations (e.g., GhostScipt) that are different implementations but have, at least in recent years been of good quality (having personally done trouble shooting of obscure PostScript failures as part of my consulting practice).

On HP LaserJets, one of the most common problems has been the use of the "%!" in Autosense mode to automatically distinguish between raw text/HP PCL and PostScript jobs. It is a setting that is easily forgotten, and can cause significant mayhem.
